Kamakhya Peeth

According to ancient Puranic traditions, the Kamakhya Shakti Peeth is one of the most revered centers of Shakti worship. It is believed that when Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacred fire of Daksha's Yajna, Lord Shiva, overwhelmed with grief, carried her body across the universe. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember her body, and the sacred parts fell upon the Earth, forming the Shakti Peeths. At this sacred spot, the Yoni (womb) of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen, making it a supreme seat of creation and feminine power.

The current structural temple and the rock-cut sculpture strewn in the vicinity indicate that the temple has been built and renovated many times in the period 8th-9th, 11th-12th, 13th-14th centuries and even later.[5] The current form, from the 16th century has given rise to a hybrid indigenous style that is sometimes called the Nilachal type: a temple with a hemispherical dome on a cruciform base.[6]
